PRODUCE
PRODUCTS
One of the most important
produce industry features of FAMOUS software is the way in which
it handles the unique requirements of perishable commodities.

Product Attributes
Produce product identification works best with a hierarchical structure
where users assemble pieces of the structure during entry. For example,
once apples are selected as the commodity only valid apple pack styles
and sizes appear. Also, only valid apple varieties, grades and labels
can be selected.
Contrast Produce Product Requirements
with Product Ids
Most generic software systems take a simple "Id" approach to
product identification: Red widgets have an Id of R1234, blue widgets
B1235, green widgets G1236, etc. This approach is cumbersome and leads
to errors when thousands of codes are required.
Orders versus Inventory
You can specify by commodity if variety, grade or label is required for
sales and purchase orders. Separately, you can specify which of these
three attributes are required in inventory. For example, you could enter
a sales order for tray pack nectarines size 72. During packing, nectarines
also require a variety and label for inventory control, packouts and grower
settlements. When the sales order is shipped any variety or label is acceptable.
Substitutions
You can specify by commodity which substitutions are allowed. For example,
size, grade and label may be substituted when shipping apples, but the
pack style and variety cannot be changed.

Units of Measure
In addition to an inventory unit of measure, commodities may be purchased
or sold in an unlimited number of units of measure. Automatic conversions
are made where possible or two quantities are entered.
Equivalents
Each produce product can be expressed in user-defined equivalent units
for packouts, settlements or other reporting such as assessment reports.
Units per Pallet
Each product has user-defined units per pallet to aid in pallet tag generation,
load planning and automatic charge allocation.
Weight
Each product has a user-defined weight to calculate packout percents,
aid in load planning and other reporting.
