Famous - Version 6

Subject to change without notice

Famous V6 is a true Client/Server application. Performance is dependent on network configuration, which consists of network components such as servers, cabling, hubs, and clients. Networks configured for simple file and printer sharing are often inadequate for true Client/Server applications. A qualified network engineer should configure your network to reap the full benefits of Famous V6.

Recommended Configurations
The following recommendations are based on the number of users and assume the Famous Database Server is installed on a dedicated server with no other applications. You may require greater capacities and/or speeds based on transaction volume.

*We currently do not support Windows Vista
*We do not support Windows XP Home/ME/98/95 on Famous V6 client workstations.

Other Considerations

Multiple Drive Configurations

The database and transaction logs can be stored on separate disks when Famous V6 is configured to use multiple physical drives or partitions. If configured for separate physical disks (or arrays), read and write performance is increased and the chance of data loss in the event of hardware failure is decreased. However, Famous V6 should never be installed on the same partition as the operating system. Refer to the Famous Installation Guide.

Network Security

Although Famous V6 takes advantage of Oracle security features, protecting your database from unauthorized access requires a secure network. This includes a properly installed and configured firewall, application of Windows Service Packs and Hot Fixes, user passwords and access policies and periodic review of security log files.

Note: Specific firewall configuration requirements are needed to accommodate Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) in Famous V6. Refer to FMS setup documentation.

Installation of Oracle Updates

Famous V6 relies on the integrity and security of the Oracle database. Your data is of paramount importance. Famous Software, LLC is a member of the Oracle Partner community and is a registered licensee of many Oracle products. We are in constant communication with Oracle about various issues of product development and security.

Oracle periodically releases security updates and patches. It is important that we understand the impact of these security patches and can verify that Famous V6 operates correctly. Do not attempt to load security patches. Once tested and approved, Oracle updates are included in Famous V6 releases.

Remote Access

Famous Support requires a native TCP/IP connection to the Famous database server to diagnose and resolve database related issues. This requires Windows Remote Access Service (RAS), configured to allow callers access to the Famous Database Server. The Famous account must be granted local administrative privileges. Click here for more information about Remote Access Requirements.

NOTE: Remote Desktop, PC Anywhere, GoToMyPC, etc., are not acceptable means of connection for supporting the Famous Database.

Memory Requirements

Famous V6 requires adequate RAM in the Server and Client. Do not rely on virtual memory as performance can be decreased. Additional memory may be required as the number of users and size of the Famous Database increases.

Network Requirements

Network Optimization

Famous V6 uses a TCP/IP network protocol. You may reconfigure your network as the number of network users and network applications increases. Typical steps include configuration of sub-networks, faster network components, or network switching.

Printing

Laser printers are recommended. A continuous form impact printer (dot matrix) is required to print preprinted continuous form documents. Famous has tested:

The Okidata impact printers require that the printer emulation matches the printer driver, the perforation is set correctly, and that the top and bottom margins are zero in the Windows printer setup.

Technical support is available to troubleshoot problems with printers as a billable service.

Blank Paper Printing

Reports, inquiries, and various documents in Famous v6 print on blank paper (8½ x 11).

Document Printing

Famous V6 prints on blank paper, stationery, preprinted laser forms, and preprinted continuous forms. Blank paper, stationery, and preprinted laser forms require a laser printer and can print multiple copies automatically. Preprinted continuous forms require an impact printer (dot matrix). The following table identifies document printing options and printer requirements. This list may not be all inclusive.
