System Requirements Print
Famous V6 is a true Client/Server application. Network features such as servers, cabling, hubs, topology and clients all affect overall system performance. Networks configured for simple “file and printer sharing” are frequently inadequate as true Client/Server platforms. A qualified network engineer should configure your network in order for you to reap the full benefits of Famous Software.

The following recommendations assume that the Famous Database Server is installed on a dedicated server running a typical Famous Software configuration and no other applications. You may require greater capacities and/or hardware speeds compatible with your transaction volume.

SERVER

10 or fewer users
  • Windows 2003 Server (Standard – 32bit) installed as a Member Server*
  • Quad Core Intel® Xeon® 2.0GHz, 1333MHz FSB Processor
  • 4 GB RAM
  • DVD-ROM or CD-ROM Drive Backup System
  • Tape backup system with supporting software is highly recommended
  • Modem (used by Famous Support for RAS)
  • 11 to 25 users
Windows 2003 Server (Standard – 32bit) installed as a Member Server*

  • 2 x Quad Core Intel® Xeon® 2.0GHz, 1333MHz FSB Processors
  • 4 GB RAM or greater (greater than 4GB requires an Enterprise operating system)
  • DVD-ROM or CD-ROM Drive
  • Backup System
  • Tape backup system with supporting software is highly recommended
  • Modem (used by Famous Support for RAS)
  • 26 to 50 users

  • Windows 2003 Server (Enterprise – 32bit) installed as a Member Server*
  • 2 x Quad Core Intel® Xeon® 2.0GHz, 1333MHz FSB Processors
  • 16 GB RAM
  • DVD-ROM or CD-ROM Drive
  • Backup System (Tape backup system with supporting software is highly recommended)
  • Modem (used by Famous Support for RAS)
  • *Domain Controller is OK. Windows Small Business Server is not supported.

    RAM

Famous V6 requires adequate Server and Client RAM. Virtual memory is not recommended. Additional RAM may be required as the number of users and size of the Famous Database increases.

    DISK DRIVES

Famous recommends utilizing SAS drives (Serial attached SCSI). Although SATA drives are adequate, the reliability and performance of SAS drives is preferred. The minimum disk space required for the Famous database is dependent upon numerous factors—volume of transactions, number of companies, etc. Our recommendation for most new installations is as follows:
  • 20 GB C:\ drive for the Operating System
  • 100 + GB D:\ drive for the Famous Database
  • DRIVE CONFIGURATIONS

  • 2 x 146GB SAS drives in a RAID 1 array (with an optional 3rd 146GB drive as a hot spare)
  • 3 x 73GB SAS drives in a RAID 5 array (with an optional 4th 73GB drive as a hot spare)
  • 4 x 73GB SAS drives in a RAID 10 array (with an optional 5th 73GB drive as a hot spare)
  • NOTE: Of these 3 configurations, RAID 10 offers the fastest disk performance

    CLIENT WORKSTATIONS

  • Windows XP Professional
  • Intel Processor® (2 GHz or greater)
  • 100 MB Network Card
  • 512 MB RAM (1GB recommended)
  • We do not support Windows Vista, XP Home, ME, 98, or 95 on client workstations at this time.
  • INSTALLATION OF ORACLE UPDATES

Famous V6 relies on the integrity and security of the Oracle database. We are a member of the Oracle Partner community, and are registered Oracle licensees. Once tested and approved, Oracle updates are automatically included in the Famous V6 releases you receive from us.

    REMOTE ACCESS

Famous Support requires a native TCP/IP connection to the Famous database server to diagnose and resolve database related issues. This necessitates Windows Remote Access Service (RAS), configured to allow authorized, remote access to the Famous Database Server. The Famous account must be granted local administrative privileges. Once connected, we need to be able to perform any task that a local client workstation does, such as copying files and connecting to the Famous database. Third party applications such as PCAnywhere®, Terminal Services® (Remote Desktop), Citrix®, or VNC®, cannot be used.

Microsoft provides the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) which allows remote users to connect to a server via a modem or Internet connection. This is the preferred method for providing remote access. Some routers, firewalls, and VPN devices can also provide this service. These devices may be used providing they are compatible with delivered Microsoft client software and protocols. Famous cannot use connections that require proprietary client software. Some support is also provided using GoToAssist.

    PRINTING

Printing is an important function. The variety of printer models grows daily. Not all printers or features are supported. Please contact Famous Software prior to purchasing any printer not specified below. If you are a Version 5 user converting to Version 6 please contact us prior to purchasing new printers.

Laser: Famous recommends HP LaserJet 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 series printers.
    We have tested HP LaserJet 5, 1200, 1300 , 2015, 4200, HP Color LaserJet 3600, Dell 1710, 3000c,and 5100c printers.

Tag Printers: Datamax I-4208, Datamax I-4212, Sato M8400 RVE , Zebra 105SL, Zebra 105SE, Zebra ZM400, Zebra Z4M Plus, Zebra 110 XiIII Plus, Zebra 170 XiIII Plus and Printronix SL5204r (RFID) Please consult us about others.

Impact Printers: A continuous form impact printer (dot matrix) is required to print preprinted continuous form documents. Famous recommends Okidata 3 and 5 series. Printer emulation must match printer.

Unsupported Printers: We do not support inkjet printers or multifunction copier (mopier) devices.

    PALLET AND BIN TAG PRINTING

Famous V6 typically uses thermal transfer printers for inventory and RFID tags. Custom tag formats are available from Famous Custom Development Services. Compatible thermal transfer printers include many made by Intermec and Datamax. Contact us to confirm compatibility prior to purchasing tag printers.

    DOCUMENT PRINTING

Famous V6 prints on blank paper, stationery, preprinted laser forms, and preprinted continuous forms. Blank paper, stationery, and preprinted laser forms require a laser printer and can print multiple copies automatically. Preprinted continuous forms require an impact printer (dot matrix). The following table identifies document printing options and printer requirements. Contact us if you have questions.

    CUSTOM FORMS

Famous Software can supply you with both standard and custom forms. Standard forms are not preprinted with your company's information. Your computer adds it while printing. Multi-part, continuous forms require an impact printer. All forms conform to Famous Software print formats. Ask your Famous Sales Representative for details, or visit www.FamousSoftware.com.
